BWU2 – Amazon Robotic Fulfillment Centre Sydney

The 4 level, ~200,000-square-metre fulfillment centre opened in early 2022. The building is the largest fulfillment centre in the southern hemisphere – it includes more structural steel than Sydney Olympic Park Stadium – and involves an extensive fit-out including robotics and conveyance networks throughout the site.

As a high occupancy, high hazard premises being first to market meant the fire engineering challenges on the scheme were significant.

Client Needs

  • Transfer of global template design to suit local codes and standards
  • Safeguard life safety and limit damage to property from fire.
  • Support innovative industrial design without compromising on safety.
  • To develop the fire strategy and to negotiate design approval with the statutory authorities.

Key Points

  • Innova Services Australia worked closely with the design team to deliver a cost-effective fire safety engineering solution to support a unique industrial concept.
  • The fire strategy included the development of fire engineering solutions to justify a number of variations from standard guidance. This ensured the proposed design aspirations of the client could be realised including rationalised fire resistance levels; bespoke smoke hazard management;  extended travel path lengths; connection of levels to facilitate the robotics and conveyor movement. Innova Services Australia were able to successfully negotiate design approval with the necessary statutory authorities.
